What is ear irrigation?
Normally your body controls the amount of naturally occurring and essential ear wax, but it can sometimes build up to an excessive level, requiring treatment. Ear irrigation uses a low-pressure flow of body temperature water or saline solution directed into the ear canal – rather than directly at the obstruction – to provide a gentle flushing of excess ear wax.
Occasionally, ear syringing can cause some temporary side effects, including:
- Dizziness
- Mild discomfort
- Ringing in the ears
- Slight loss of hearing
This is completely normal and these symptoms will usually disappear within 24 hours.

Is ear irrigation the best treatment for me?
Ear irrigation is an excellent therapy for patients with a large build-up of ear wax or other debris. Traditionally ear wax syringing might have been used for patients with these symptoms, but irrigation has now mostly replaced this method of treatment, as it is seen as safer and more effective.
